Summer Night Golfing: Why You Should Play Under the Stars

For many, Florida nights are ideal for their sport or hobby:  less hustle and bustle, cooler temperatures, and (depending on where you are) less noise. Summer night golfing is ideal if you want to keep your game sharp but would prefer to beat the heat.

How Night Golfing Works

Night golf is played after sunset. Lighting is strategically placed to highlight features of the course and allow for safe gameplay. Neon or glow-in-the-dark golf balls and illuminated flagsticks are often used to further enhance visibility. The rules of night golf are the same, but some games/courses may be shorter or have minor changes to suit the unique conditions.

Is Night Golfing Safe?

If you’re comfortable in low lighting, summer night golfing is a fun, safe way to play the game. Course lighting is adequate to see by, and the course staff will be available to answer questions or provide assistance. If you’re new to nighttime play, consider taking a friend to share the experience with.

Night Golf Benefits: 5 More Reasons to Play

  • Staying cool in Florida summers is an obvious plus. But that’s not the only reason more players are night golfing. Here’s what we like about it:
  • Calm and Quiet: Florida golf courses can get crowded during the day. The quieter atmosphere of night golf can make for a more comfortable and enjoyable experience if you love golf, but don’t love crowds.
  • Unique Ambiance: Playing under the stars (or the lights) gives the game a fun, unique ambience you don’t get in the daylight.
  • Flexibility: Night golf gives you a chance to experience the joy of the game when you’re not available for daytime play.
  • New Perspective: Many players enjoy seeing their favorite courses in a new light. It offers a unique opportunity to work on your game or to have a new experience at a favorite course.

Our Tips for a Great Night Golf Game

  • Do Some Research: Night play isn’t available at all courses. Check event calendars for courses in your area and know your options before you go.
  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Play the course during daylight if you can, and practice situational awareness when playing at night.
  • Dress for the Game: Sun protection won’t be necessary, but you may want to layer up for the cooler temperatures. If your course includes a lot of water, long sleeves and bug spray may keep you more comfortable.
  • Bring Way-finding Tools: The GPS on your phone or watch can help you stay oriented and confident playing on a low-lit course.
